Hamas may get support from Iran or others, but it gets its power

From its acceptance by the Palestinian citizens. There was a vote. The Palestinians are not guilt free here. I think one of the main points in that article was for there to be any freedom from a Hamas threat, Palestinians must have a more acceptable alternative and rebuke Hamas.
