Well of course many would. I would support taxing you more

to pay me also but that doesn't mean it is right (or in the best long term interests of the country).

The traditional GOP target were people who believed that smaller government (and thus less need for taxes to fund same), strong law enforcement, and less intrusive foreign policy would be best for the country as a whole. I don't think they were out to screw over the working man. They lost control of the party when the evangelicals and white, southern democrats came on board.
