Take it a step further - I think you’re describing the way things work now.


Colin Powell apparently didn’t ever run for anything because his wife didn’t want the glare. Competitive campaigns result in campaigns trying to shred each other. Today, if you run for anything, you’re nuts if you think you can keep skeletons in closets. It’s the competitive campaigns that cause this. Elected officials start campaigning for their next election about a minute after they’re sworn in.

If we’re talking about lottery picks serving one term and returning to private life, all the campaigning goes away and the glare fades dramatically. I think you got this concern backwards. Grant’s idea would reduce the chances of endless family scandal hunts.
