Kinda smacks of the liberal tools who were writing about the woes of the “neglected white working class” after Trump got elected, as if “economic anxiety” really had anything to do with anything.

What he and others like him miss is the obvious: there is a very strong, very dark authoritarian trend happening in this country, and it’s being driven almost entirely by the right. The right who has (in the same way as some of our foreign adversaries, one in particular) gotten very skilled at manipulating messaging and spreading lies, distortions, fear, and half truths like a virus through social media (pun intended). Not everyone who is conditioned or influenced by these tactics is some kind of cartoon character Klansman like TomKaznanski either, although plenty of them exist too.

Democrats, OTOH, stand for real ideas and are willing to fight for institutions that are often unpopular and perceived as inefficient or feckless because democracy is hard and half of our government is committed to tearing everything down and obstructing rather than working toward any sort of consensus. It looks bad, people get frustrated and impatient, people start to think all these morons do is just argue and bicker and get nothing done….then they sprinkle in all this wedge issue nonsense that tells people Dems spend their time arguing about chicks with dicks in competitive swimming, etc. Then they make up lies about election fraud to undermine the validity of our elected government altogether. People start to get confused and distrustful, but still want their various problems handled….so where do they turn?

Some guy who tells them “I alone can fix everything.”

Sounds great until you wake up one morning and realize that a coup happened and you helped it.

And tools like that writer are what the authoritarians would call “useful idiots.”
