I'm sure you'll like Joe Bageant's book Deer Hunting With Jesus

Not only does he address these same issues, but, if I recall correctly, you're a fan of Hunter S. Thompson and he writes in that style.

After Deer Hunting I read his memoir Rainbow Pie, also an excellent and moving read and I'm sure you'd enjoy it. He grew up in the Winchester area.

I've been reading a lot on this subject lately. I could pass along more recs but I'll spare you.
