For much of Virginia's history white folks were categorized as either "Tuckahoes" or "Cohees". "Tuckahoe" being the word applied by poor/independent upland whites to the elite aristocracy of the tidewater (originally a term of derision, but as such terms often are, later an acceptable self-identifier). "Cohee" was the corresponding term of derision applied to the poor and independent (i.e. non-slaveholding) whites, mocking their Scotch-Irish accents. That word was eventually replaced by the still-common "rednecks," "white trash," "hillbillies," "hicks," "peckerwoods," etc.
