My problem with it is twofold. First it's always thrown out there as a deep
insight from some guy in a powdered wig. Historical attribution is important given how much weight we give to the opinions of the founders, who by the way weren't gods and weren't always right themselves. The fact that this quote appears to have originated in an Oklahoma newspaper in the 1950's would automatically make it more suspect. Facts matter, which really is the subject of this thread.
Second, the quote itself is highly debatable. We aren't a democracy, as conservatives are so fond of pointing out except when they're trying to make a point. Neither you, nor me, nor anybody else in this country votes themselves money from the treasury. I suppose one could argue that the fact that corporations buy votes in the legislatures and Congress to get favorable laws for themselves is voting themselves money from the treasury, but even that is more nuanced discussion. Bring down the republic? The quote is simplistic and, I would argue, not true or even born out historically.
