I found this survey to be extremely educational as it provides some
great incite into fragmentation of the worlds second largest religion. I read another Pew survey which estimated that as of 2010, the world Islamic population was approximately 1.6 billion but expected to grow 73% by 2050 (vs Christianity at only 35%). Clearly, we need to gain a better understanding of the various factions within this religion worldwide.
Some of the more enlightening factors for me were:
- 71% of Jordanians, who are perceived as moderates, support
Sharia law.
- A relatively low % of Muslims worldwide believe the Shia-Sunni
tensions is a pressing issue and even in countries like Iraq
(23%) and Pakistan (34%), it's far from a majority opinion.
- It's obvious to me from the results of this survey that we need to
commit substantial resources to deal with radical Islamic extremism
based in South and Southeast Asia as we attempt to fight this
fragment of the religion.
I'm not for persecuting an entire religion based on the existence of one radical segment. However, I have no problem profiling various aspects of the religion which likely lead to the radicalization process. Finding a balance is the key.
