This one is up there as one of the more
remarkable things to come out of this administration. The government is changing the baseline by a factor of 100% essentially overnight as these rules will kick in for any salaried employee working more than 40 hours per week and making less than 47,476. That is just incredible in my opinion. Oh and this was a "compromise" as the administration was pushing for just over 50,000. For many small businesses (and plenty not so small), I would say it is a near certainty that the most common reaction will be to make as sure as they can that no employee at this salary level works over 40 hours per week or if this can't easily be controlled (which is easier said than done for many), move what they can to more a more hourly/temp structure. This is not a new overtime structure so I'm not arguing so much against the rule itself at this stage, but the manner and level at which this has been changed is quite amazing. I would love to know if supporters of this administration sincerely think this is the way government should operate -- and forget things like the laughable timing of all of this, just talking substance. Should businesses who are paying employees 47k per year who may be working 45 hours per week truly have to deal with special overtime calculations?
