Let’s get one misconception corrected. ‘States Rights’ was figment


of the imagination of the Lost Cause.

The Confederate States at the start of the war were Against states rights. Not for them.

One of the ancillary causes of the war was the refusal of the northern states to not return escaped slaves. A violation of the Fugitive Slave Act. The northern states were exerting states rights and southern states were vehemently opposed to this.

It was only after the war when it dawned on the former confederates that they had been fighting against freedom, that the Lost Cause began and with it a perversion of States Right.
