I think in this environment of constant outrage, part of how we normalize

Things like the racism inherent in Haley’s equivocation is by constantly responding with a shoulder-shrug, everyone does it kind of reaction. Most recently over the Israel/Gaza situation, I’ve seen red at times over (my impression of) the left’s dismissal of some of its own illiberalism with a casual “the other side’s worse”.

That kind of attitude is both a cop out and a way to normalize the unacceptable.

This thread is about a very relevant current event. Niki Haley, woman of color, former guv of SC and the one who reacted to a racist shooting by finally removing the confederate flag from public buildings, could not bring herself to mention slavery as even just 1 factor in the civil war. Because she's a racist? Hardly. Because she’s scared shitless of a base she obviously thinks she’d offend with the truth? Yeah, apparently - in 20 fucking 23!

That’s simply appalling. Period, end of story, all by itself, regardless of other imperfections (putting it mildly) along our political spectrum.
