What she should have said was the Civil War was about slavery ...

but a peripheral debate that came about was state's right ... which is a relevant topic today. That said, we should not forget the main purpose for the Civil War ... that was the fight for the most basic human rights for all and common decency.

I think that's what she wanted to convey ... but felt the last sentence would alienate some of the GOP voting base. It's sad. Note ... there are even posters on this board who have said that the Civil War was mainly about state's rights too. Those are the type people who she was not trying to offend ... which are red flags. That said, she's better than most of the GOP Presidential candidates ... which is scary.
