Called out for her ridiculous answer, and equally ridiculous attempt to wriggle out of it. There’s no wriggling out of it. I wouldn’t even both sides it with DeSantis - he’s right, the repub party’s greatest accomplishment is ending slavery (that’s the nation’s greatest accomplishment), but then separately, one might want to point out that his educational initiatives to emphasize the benevolence of slavery are cut from the same cloth. That, and the civil war as a struggle over states rights, or role of govt, or anything other than slavery, are both “Lost Cause” tropes.

Same with your thoughts about the left - I mean, one need not be perfect to point out the absolute clownishness of Haley’s answer. The fact that such bullshit would come from a pres candidate, former guv of the first state to secede, and that anyone feels concerned about offending a major party’s base over the truth of the matter in ‘23 - that’s appalling.

Sure - the left also has an extreme. It demands orthodoxy, cancels/silences non-conformists, has its own issues with bending history to its purposes, all that. We have plenty of opptys to call that out around here.

Shouldn’t reduce one little bit the backlash against any pres candidate who can’t instantly cite slavery as the cause of the civil war. We should be long past such pandering to racism in 2023.
