You thought it was important that state legislatures are "closest to the people", whatever the hell that means. You then say that elected judges are not good. But aren't they "close to the people"? LA Slaw indeed.
Also, Article 1, Section 4
The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.
Clearly congress can tell the states something about how they run elections.
