Interesting musings, really. There’s no path I see to implementing any

Of it. To really do this you’d have to rewrite the entire Constitution. That may have been the outcome many of the framers expected. But it’s not how it turned out - the Constitution, a result of a messy, contentious negotiation, turned out to have the flexibility to grow and evolve with the country and the world around it.

I’d be in no great hurry to abandon it even if that were realistic. Sure, the states are political constructs. Any democracy our size has to have them. I think most of the problems described in the article could be addressed by getting rid of partisan gerrymandering. That would address a lot of the disproportionate power it claims are exercised against urban areas by states. It should also address the oversupply of hyperpartisan congressional districts in the country.

But imo, this is a time to double down on the miraculous document that resulted in the evolution of the USA to the greatest democracy in history, not look to abandon it. I don’t think the problems we face are due to our national structure. It’s the decline in our ability and even willingness to share a common reality.
