Thought-provoking article. If you were designing our system from scratch,

It wouldn’t make sense to build it the way it is. States are an unnecessary layer in many areas (though for efficiency’s sake there might be a role building and maintaining roads and a few other things). But local and federal governments could pick up most of what they do. Then you have one less layer, fewer costs, and more local control. What’s not to like, GOPers?
