It actually hasn't been a catastrophic failure so far, but you are correct

that that is the cost-benefit analysis which must be done.

What we can and should do about it.

I think we are now almost at the point which you and a few others have argued we should have been at in March 2020 and every minute since then. I think you were wrong, and it would have been tragic had we followed your advice.

My opinion, which I think is probably the national plurality, is that we will be at that back-to-normal point when the Omicron wave is fully behind us. Probably by the end of February, possibly mid-March.

Places that are further along the downslope on the backside of Omicron will get back to normal sooner than those closest to the peak. (It will be a slower fall than the rise was, on a graph where the x axis is cases and the y axis is time.).

Most larger population localities in Colorado are letting mask mandates expire without renewal this week, or next, are actively terminating them.

A lot of death could have been avoided had we not had such a large percentage of vaccine holdouts, but that's the price of freedom of speech, which includes freedom to misinform (short of yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater) and freedom to believe any stupid fucking thing you want to. If there's anything catastrophic about our response, it's this, but it's baked into the system.
