I think the place to start is always the 2012 electoral map, then start
asking, which one of these blue ones will he take.
I could easily see Virginia, Florida, and Ohio, and that's a combined 60 electoral vote swing, for 272 HRC to 266 Trump.
Then one of the closer blue states on that map..New Hampshire? Where HRC finished a distant second and Trump won his primary handily? That one makes it 270 to 270 and into the House we go, right? Where the outcome is assured.
So no matter how "dumb" RQ thinks the country is or isn't, the scenario isn't hard to envision, and there are alternative scenarios.
But to your point regarding "states the GOP hasn't dreamed of for many years:" None of these are states the GOP hasn't dreamed of for years, they're states the GOP has taken fairly recently.
