I don’t think this tension can be eliminated in a free society. Totalitarian states are fine with massive sweeps capturing huge numbers of innocent people to make streets safer. We have a legal system designed to prevent even just 1 wrongful conviction - even if doing that would release 10 guilty parties. That’s the refrain of “innocent until proven guilty”.
Can’t railroad defendants into rushed trials. Can’t create skin in the game for those who have none, and violent crime tends to hit those with no resources (victims and perpetrators). We want safer streets. But most of us also want “innocent until proven guilty”. Until we abandon our constitution (which I’m hoping happens never), this tension is going to exist. And as the pic you used to close out your post exemplifies, will always be a favorite political football.
