I think our media exacerbates the tendencies you describe in paragraph 1

We should go back and look at the vaccine stuff. The government wasn't going house to house, making people take it - it was always a choice. But we freaked out when employers and establishments started requiring them as a condition of entry. Wanna go on this cruise? Show proof of vaccination. You want to come back to the office? Show proof. You don't want to get vaccinated, realize you may sacrifice a bit elsewhere.

This is where we really failed. And our leaders and media didn't make things any better. How often did Donald Trump tell us he'd been vaccinated? How'd he look on TV when taking the first shot? The politicization was just insane.
