I like Anne Applebaum. Only thing I disagree with is her lament over the
Natural alignment of immigration and Ukraine funding as the levers of compromise. I think dems have been playing politics on immigration for years (repubs do too, obviously), such as suddenly becoming allergic to any semblance of a “wall” at any point along the border. Physical barriers and a whole range of other measures of course make sense at points along the border. It’s a long-ass border.
We have crazy budget pressures - those are real - and Ukraine does feel like an open check. I get that - how can anyone know how long this will go and how much it will cost. Many of us think it’ll cost less than when an emboldened China takes advantage of American in-fighting, and Putin starts zeroing in on nato countries, but in the here and now, Ukraine’s an unknown future cost of billions. So, we have this unique aligning of controversial, politically sensitive issues which can easily lead to compromises on both. They align perfectly with each other.
The only thing preventing it is Trump and his personal belief (imo) that the more chaotic the environment, the stronger he is politically. I think he’s giving the dems a political gift with this. If the senate actually does muster 10 repubs who can resist the Trump intimidation campaign I’m sure is in full swing now, then I think we’ll really see if Johnson has any balls at all.
If we get there, I only hope dems are very clear with the speaker that they will not allow him to be removed just for allowing a popular bipartisan bill to get a vote in the full chamber. In retrospect, they should’ve done that for McCarthy, no matter how they feel about him, because right now, they’ve given veto power to Marjorie Taylor Greene.
