A two state solution is SOOO much more achievable because all it really
takes is an agreement from both side that the other has a right to exist. Once there - the rest is just details and line drawing. Difficulty, but doable. There can still be a level of mutual distrust and precautions taken against each other - but that could be an essentially peaceful if tense coexistence - North & South Korea have had that for 50 years for example.
A one state solutions requires not just the above - agreement from both side that the other has a right to exist - but also necessitates mutual trust and belief in the good faith of the other side to continually work together. When that does not exist or breaks down (see some of that is happening politically in the US right now - but without the extreme religious underpinnings) there cannot be a governing together. Sure - they could be jammed into one state - but that would lead to the immediate repression of one side by the other - whoever was in power first - because they simply do not trust each other at all and would not risk the other coming into power.
