That answer sounds like throwing in the towel.

Both on the divide that may be having a really corrosive effect on our society, and on the way the dems were blind sided. On the latter, maybe a little more like denial - just assuming that the problems were all about Hill, so the dems can just keep going like they've been going and treat '16 as an anomaly.

Who can parse out the reasons that the dems got everything so wrong in these crucial rust belt states that were supposed to be part of the "blue firewall?". If dems really want to be sure that does not happen again, they should IMO be taking a very hard look at this impression that so many have of the NY/CA/MA dems and liberals as being in love with the sound of their own indignant voices. Because there is no way that connecting with people more as equals will damage the "cause", if your cause is ensuring there is no repeat of this result - both in terms of the complete misread of overall voter sentiment, and of the profound electoral defeat they suffered nationwide at almost all levels. Strategically speaking, assuming that '16 was an anomaly comes only with downside.

I know too many Hill supporters up here who seem to have no interest in self-examination. Winning elections, setting agendas seems a secondary consideration to the sense of self worth they derive from preaching down at the "deplorables". The irony? The left loves the word "bubble" to describe the right, but from their complete and utter shock at the outcome about a week ago, turns out they've been the ones in the bubble. I certainly include myself in that. I utterly floored.

And of course this inability to "like" people with whom we disagree should be a source of extreme national shame IMO. Makes a mockery of everything our country is supposed to represent.
