So here's the million dollar question: was there a "swelling of support"


for Donald Trump in those states, or just a cratering of support and turnout for Hillary? The numbers seem to say the latter: if you compare how many votes Romney got in '12 to Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin they are roughly the same. Hillary, OTOH, got a few hundred thousand fewer votes than Obama did in both states. Trump did significantly better than Romney did in PA and OH, but again got fewer votes than Obama did in 2008 or 2012.

Could it just come down to turnout and candidate appeal in what looks like a hopelessly divided country? I'm starting to think that really is the answer, as unfortunate as it may be. Wish there were a way to bridge the gap but it's almost like we have two completely different countries that co-exist and, quite frankly, don't like each other very much.
