If a minority wants to return to a dorm where most others are minorities, I do not think that means they cannot cope with being around white people. It just means they feel they will be better able to navigate that particular year of college experience with a built-in support group that shares their cultural identity. Yes it is a bunker mentality, just like choosing a fraternity with people who share your socio-economic background or participating in social groups that are predominantly white.

Most whites have the luxury of having their 'whiteness' be an implicit, rather than explicit, aspect of their identity. They can focus on being jocks, or nerds, or beer aficionados, or football fans, or german language enthusiasts, or tuba players, etc. without often being the 'representative of their race' in social interactions. Women have a very similar problem in engineering and technical fields, with the added bonus of being hit on by every person they dare smile at if they are at all attractive. There is a good reason no sane woman would dare openly participate in this particular online community (as well a most others with a sports tilt), and it is not because they all hate men. It is just too much shit for the payoff.
