"Smear campaign"? Doesn't that imply unfounded allegations and character
assassination? Something like allegations of affairs spread about George Bush and Mitt Romney paying zero income taxes would qualify as smear campaigns. I think some Republicans have done a great deal to discredit themselves with respect to the Clintons, with Benghazi, for example. On the other hand I think the Clintons have brought most of what has happened over the years upon themselves.
Rush Limbaugh did not put the FBI files in the White House residence, did he? Did some other Republican? People went to jail over Whitewater... remember the McDougals? Jim Tucker? Of course the Clintons should have been investigated as part of that deal. Remember the disappearance and miraculous reappearance of the Rose Law firm billing records? It seems to be a common occurrence with the Clintons. NOBODY DID THIS STUFF TO THEM!! It's fact, not smear or innuendo. Travelgate. Cattle futures. Yes, they deserve investigation and the press that goes along with it. It seems to me the very best thing you can say about the Clintons is that they are the archetypal greasy small town sheriffs that take favors, line their own pockets and play filthy politics while they go about their jobs.
Bill and Hillary practically invented the art of intentionally subtly misquoting what an opponent has said in order to misrepresent it and you are worried about her getting smeared? (Case in point, before the SC primary 8 years ago Bill Clinton on the stump in front of a crowd mocking Barack Obama for saying that the Republican party had been the party of GOOD ideas. In fact, what Obama had said is that the Dems had to wake up. That the GOP had been the more energized party and had a lot of ideas. Of course he never said GOOD ideas and of course Bill knew that. That sort of thing turns my stomach.)
I remember the first time I saw Bill Clinton on TV early in the primary season in 1992. My first impressions were very positive. When he answered a question about entitlement reform by saying everybody would have to contribute I applauded and thought he was a Democrat that I could vote for. Of course later in the campaign he completely changed his answer. It has been all downhill from there as far as I am concerned. One lie after another, one shady deal after another. Today there is nobody that I hold more in contempt than the Clintons. It's not because of Rush Limbaugh or Fox (I never listen or watch either) it is because of their own sleazy actions. They have deserved ALMOST every headline and investigation that has come their way.
