Thanks, Hoober.
It was the 2001 recession, not the recent one, but yes.
To clarify I fully understand that people are struggling in a lot of places (especially places like Michigan, Ohio, WVA) but the defeatist chicken little rhetoric annoys the shit out of me. Its not like there werent problems and upheaval in the 60's (civil rights, Vietnam), 70's (stagflation, gas shortages), or after. There are problems that need to be addressed but change happens incrementally through compromise and collective efforts. You cant elect some jackass who says he's going to wave a magic wand and bring textile manufacturing jobs back to the rust belt.
And I still believe life is pretty damn good for most people in this country. I've seen real poverty before and most of the people I see railing about how screwed and broken the country are and how we're all royally screwed are employed and tweeting from an iphone while theyre eating take out food in comfortable, heated/air conditioned home. Not to make light of people's financial struggles (and some struggle mightily) but I find it troubling so many people are so programmed to believe everything is irreparably broken that they want to destroy it all and start from scratch. Be careful what you wish for....amd Im not even sure what some are wishing for other than to,fiddle while Rome burns, which is about the most fucked up,and idiotic reason to vote for someone I've ever heard of. Its maddening and beyond irresponsible.
