But death panels really aren't in the hands of private insurers for the
most part. Most of the tougher decisions are end of life care and is covered by Medicare. There needs to be a tough decision about what can be covered. It's tough to talk about "cost vs. benefit" when it involves human life, but we simply can't afford to do $100K procedures to prolong the life of 90 year olds. I wouldn't want to be in charge of writing that change to medicare, but it's going to have to happen, or NO ONE will have medical coverage. Spending in the last year of life accounts for 25-30% of all medicare expenditures.
