Militarily. Israel did significant damage to Iran’s control structure when it destroyed the Iranian consulate in Syria. Everyone knew Iran would respond to that. They couldn’t fail to. Best deescalatory option would have been a few missiles from a proxy. Iran instead telegraphed for days what they intended to do, sent an impressive looking barrage at Israel, after having given them and us all the time we needed to literally intercept them all. One injury, no damage reported.

If Iran stops here, Israel absolutely has an off ramp to only respond diplomatically. They won this exchange in a walk. Iran basically attached the off ramp to their response. It was the second most deescalatory response available to them. If they let it drop here, things could cool down, in terms of this direct exchange.
