Even though my battery backed thermostats stayed on, the furnace produced no heat, because it needs electricity to operate.
Just did a little googling on it - this is not an additional risk with gas heat - just as susceptible to power outages as electric heat. Come to think of it, that was true when I was a kid with our oil powered boiler too.
