Traffic spiked, resulted in a flood at border communities, which soon became a very strong political opportunity for Abbott (Desantis attempt to co-opt it - not so much).

That decision alone is maybe the one Biden most wishes he could have back imo. Even more importantly - once the admin had urgency, a compromise started to take shape in the senate. There was a severe opportunity cost in not developing that urgency sooner.

How can you rationally try to make the case that all the immigration issues between 1/21 and the failure of the Lankford compromise are not on the current admin at all? If you really think that, then how can you oppose Operation Lonestar? I mean, if the admin is so powerless to do anything to secure borders/end chaos, what choice does a border state have?

Answer is - all the Biden admin had to do was prioritize this before other dems started hitting them over the head with it. Plain and simple. Right now Trump could well be neutered on this issue. Instead, it’s his greatest advantage. No matter how loudly partisan dems scream the Biden admin was just an innocent, powerless victim of circumstance. All that does is feed the impression of incompetence from the guy who was supposed to be uber-competent.
