Someone shoots and kills a 12 yr old. Ain’t much doubt about the ethics if that kid was a target just for standing there. If the kid’s pointing a gun at someone, the ethics are totally different. If that kid happened to be in a house with a murderer who was resisting arrest, who pulls the kid in front of him as a cop was firing, the ethics are different still.

International law governing war crimes recognizes that the situation and circumstances have an enormous impact on the ethics.

And by the way, I’m not opposed to any sort of humanitarian “pause”, nor do I think Israel will necessarily be, even if they don’t get fully on board with public pronouncements. In spite of the attempts by so many anti-Israel flame throwers to make Israel look as barbaric as Hamas, Israel cares deeply about the humanitarian crisis, even if only for purely strategic reasons. They will not allow Hamas and allies to consider this hit and run barbarity to be confirmed effective because they use human shields, but no country on earth is more keenly aware of the strategic cost of innocent blood.
