I don't have any issue with most of what you're proposing, e.g. requiring

safety training to buy, facilitating easy/inexpensive background checks so that no private sale can be done without one, etc..

I personally don't have an issue if you ban every single gun, as long as you're willing to confiscate all of those out there and lock up anyone possessing one, so that single mom in East St. Louis doesn't feel a need to own one to protect herself and her kids. But that's never going to happen.

And without the other very steps Nikki is talking about (better enforcement and better mental health efforts) even an "assault weapons" ban becomes mostly just a "feel good" effort that we "did something" which actually does little. We're far more likely to be shot by a handgun than one of those, and the "nuts" that are committing these mass shooting atrocities will simply revert to other means (a la VT shooting, Waukeshau parade driver, etc.) and not let such a ban deter their desire to go out in a blaze of infamy. That's where Nikki's mental health points have to come in.
