How about all the Dems vote for a palatable Republican and hope

that 6 or 7 Republicans join them in doing so?

I'm not sure what R current house member is 'palatable', but as noted, the Speaker can be anyone.

I know it's been somewhat of a joke on this board, but nominate Romney (would he have to leave the Senate?), Or Liz Cheney. Or hell, even Boehner or Paul Ryan. Maybe the Georgia guy who wouldn't find the 11,800 votes. Someone NOT beholden to Republican primary voters who has a record of compromise or at least respect for the actual law could be an excellent choice.
