Tariffs to wall us off from the world (and Trump's policies are far beyond China. We are now the preeminent protectionist among all developed nations, and more than many developing nations) will not change the interconnectivity of the world. It won't take coal off its path to obsolescence. It won't change the automation that is replacing workers.

America's economy is probably more than twice the size of its closest rival (because China certainly inflates its numbers). Our military is unmatched. Technology has brought capabilities to our personal lives that were science fiction not long ago. "Make American Great Again" is promising to whisk insecure people back to an imagined past of great, secure jobs without any of the challenges that existed at those times. But keeping these people mired in an imagined past just extends the misery. The world isn't going to stop moving forward because Trump demands it.
