Hmmm. I think Facebook has all kinds of problems, but the govt's
hesitation to put rules in place gives me the exact opposite view from yours. Facebook would be - is in fact - under the thumb of the Chinese govt. Saudi Arabia's too, apparently. Here, the "spying" you are referring to is purely commercial. None of us pays a penny for the service, but we do pay a price. Our data. On the one hand, you have the Snowden affair, which is really about fear. Americans have IMO been elevating fears about terrorism (and more recently, immigration), and a majority are willing to trade privacy for protection from all threats, real and imagined. I am not among those people, but Americans have always thought the sky is permanently falling and we love nothing more than being afraid. It unites us.
But the Facebook thing? That's the opposite of govt surveillance. It's about coming to terms with the idea that there is still no such thing as a free lunch. Even in the digital age (a lot of people had to come to terms with that during the fun days of Napster, too). [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 01/03/2019 11:24AM]
