This is something that needs to be worked out in regulations and the courts

but generally, you need to do your job description. Now I don't know all the ins and outs of this immigration crap that everyone is obsessing about, but suppose for the sake of argument, the federal government orders the LAPD to arrest people for immigration violations. Can the feds do that? Is it legally in the LAPDs jurisdiction to arrest people for immigration violations? Or is it something that would happen in the course of arrest for something more in the LAPD's wheelhouse like robbery or assault, for example? I suppose I would questions the cops' authority to do anything beyond that; if they suspect an immigration problem it seems to me they'd need to transfer jurisdiction, or they might not choose to. Anybody know? This seems like a legal procedure question.

Now in the case of Kim Davis it is quite different. Here is a county clerk refusing to do something that is clearly her job. It doesn't really matter the reason she is citing. She pretty clearly can be reprimanded or fired.
