I don't pretend to have much "wisdom" here. But the analyses I've read by
those who do don't seem particularly rosy. I also was a bit surprised such a monumental decision would be put to a pure majority vote. I think it would be easier to accept for everyone if this were something like a 70-30 margin .... but imagine all the horrible policies we would have in this country if we just put things to a vote and took what 50.1% of those who voted wanted.
Call me an elitist all you want but I DO think the voters are easily manipulated and do NOT think the people are fit to make policy decisions about trade, finance, healthcare, foreign policy, etc.
The point of elected representatives is to have people who (in theory at least) know what they're doing and make what they believe are the right decisions but can be held accountable by their constituents.
I thought most people since the days of Ancient Greece agreed pure democracy as a form of government is madness.
