We have no independent details of Carson's story.

Not that I can find. Just his statement, first made in October 2013, that the IRS audited him that summer, first looking as some real estate holdings. This followed his prayer breakfast speech that February. No details, but it fit his call to end the IRS. (Of course, he turned around and asked the IRS to end tax-exempt status for a Muslim organization!)

Carson always seemed a little hazy with the truth, which is why I quoted Sen. Coburn. This winter, after he replaced his campaign manager, Carson said, "You know, we had people who really didn’t seem to understand finances, or maybe they did, maybe they were doing it on purpose."

And Donald Trump said that he might have been targeted by the IRS because he was "a strong Christian." I suppose we should take that at face value as well.
