see if we made the world's largest market for drugs significantly less profitable. I'd actually like to see us open up the US for reimportation of drugs from other markets in order to bring down US drug prices and likely raise drug prices in the rest of the world.

I do worry about the government setting prices for a product that can cost hundreds of millions (or even billions) to develop, but also often has a variable manufacturing cost that is small, small fraction of the average sale price. The uncertainty alone would have an impact on drug companies willingness to invest... particularly in lower volume, niche market type drugs where the only way the R&D is justified is if the pharma can charge a huge price.

I'm not saying this as defense for the status quo, but I think people are underestimating the potential impact of screwing around with gov't price controls for the world's largest drug market.
