There is an implication that these represent catch and release but the data is relatively silent as to WHEN they were caught and WHEN they were released. The only real specific example given was of a man who spent 16 years in prison before his release. If someone serves their time, they get out of prison.

As such the writer's conclusion that the DROP in releases in 2015 was solely because of the drop in arrests seems over stated at best. That is likely directionally accurate, but it would be good to know what % of releases were arrested in previous years

And the article also says that primary reasons for release rather than deportation are 1) a judge ordered their release; and 2) deportation is not an option because their home countries will not take them back. Our current laws offer no alternative but release in the case of 2. While the author says the ICE shares blame for judges decisions, she offers no evidence of that.

Then there is this comment from the article:

The problem here is that these stats apply to our entire population, not just illegal immigrants.

A good question is whether we do aggressively deport illegals who commit crimes to countries who will take them back. The article is silent.

It's gaps and questions like that, that lead a discerning reader to question the source, especially given their political leanings.
