Another word: Arizona.
I've been reading about prop 123 down there. The governor and legislature have been making deep cuts to education funding due to deep reductions in taxes, benefitting primarily their buddies, of course. Now they propose to shore up school funding by selling off the state land trust, roughly 9M acres the state received at statehood from which the state is able to get funds from leasing. At the same time, $5M has showed up in the state budget to help fund the ASU Center for the Study of Economic Liberty, initiated by, naturally, the Koch brothers through tax-exempt funding by their "charitable trusts," a classic tax loophole.
The Kochs and others of course have also been championing the sell off of public lands nationally, inspiring guys like Cliven Bundy as well as the little Bundy that occupied Malheur, to help them in their quest against BLM and their management of public lands. In Arizona, who do you want to bet will be at the top of the list for the land sale resulting from 123?
So, we argue about whether liberals are smug, while the TP/GOP distracts us with faux controversies and then enables policies that steal us blind.
