I think the author makes a very valid argument.

I had a very good friend of mine dismiss trump early in the process because "trump supporters are not voters." He explained to me that this was based on statistics that showed the main factor in whether or not one votes is amount of education and trump supporters overwhelmingly did not have high school degrees. However I found the authors tone to be equally smug and off putting. He also failed to address the smugness of the conservative elite that has led to the rise of trump. These are people who traditionally identified as republican but have been let down by conservative policies. They haven't switched teams for the most part but have rejected traditional conservative ideas.
