I would not have expected that article from Vox
largely because Vox appears to cater in large part to the very audience described in the article.
Then again, maybe that's why they know best of all how to write it.
It's a spot-on description, IMO. Could hardly have nailed the description of the smug liberal better. (With as many words as it took, he better have.)
It's a little short on suggestions, though. The paragraph that starts, "I am suggesting that they instead wonder...." is a great start. The thing about the smug liberal archetype is that one of the things they're so smug about is their burning empathy, and yet that paragraph is guaranteed to be something that never crossed their mind.
The writer stopped short of the biggest cure, though: Considering that you might actually be wrong and that the other guy might have a point. Which is good advice for everyone, of course. I don't just mean one's own self, though; I mean in terms of the spectrum of things that encompasses "the left." I think conservatives do this much better. The KKK and Westboro are generally considered part of "the right" but nobody on the mainstream right really wants them there. The Republican "establishment" as well as a huge mess of conservatives are trying like hell to get rid of Trump. I don't think there is much introspection of the left, by the left; the only criticism the left will make of the left is that it's not left enough.
