I don't believe he would say, nor that it is fair for us to say, that he

"led" the rebellion.

He, I am given to understand, opposed secession; perhaps I have that wrong.

He never held elective office in the Confederacy and never as far as I am aware endorsed any political course of action or even a candidate for political office i the Confederacy.

I believe Beauregard and Joe Johnston were superior to him in the first year plus of the war and he didn't even ascend to command of the Army of Northern Virginia until summer of 1862 when Johnston was wounded at Seven Pines in the Peninsula campaign.

I would say he "served" the rebellion, rather than led it. Perhaps applying moral standards of today that is a distinction without a difference, I don't know. I would say he saw himself as a servant of the Commonwealth of Virginia first and of the Confederacy which Virginia chose to align itself, second, and I have no doubt that if Virginia hadn't seceded he would have been the commander of the Army of The Potomac for the very brief period the war would have lasted.
