-- The British military was in poor condition in September 1938.
-- The British had their hands full in India and the rest of the empire.
-- Germany's Sudeten claims were not without reasons, and maybe not enough to go to war over. I've talked with several Americans with German background who said they just fine with it at the time. After all, what was Czechoslovakia to have a claim on the German-speaking population?

That said, Chamberlain did not have to accept a peace agreement as the only alternative to war.
