I think the right move would have been to align with Russia before Hitler did, although that might have been unrealistic before the war forced them together. But - no matter how you slice it, Chamberlain’s boasts of locking in peace with his Czech agreement will live in infamy as maybe the ultimate statement that didn’t age well. That alone went a long way to convincing Hitler he had carte blanche.

Hey, Stalin made his own deal with the devil, and was reportedly absolutely gobsmacked when Hitler invaded the Soviets. So, he’s at least as bad. But nobody’s looking to rehabilitate his legacy. Chamberlain’s isn’t as bad, but it can’t be rehabilitated either.
