I think you mean Medicare. I lean this way too, but I'm less pessimistic
about the financing if we assume what's currently spent on premiums with private insurers gets routed to Medicare taxes instead. Don't forget there's a lot of money spent by insurers and providers in the current system on marketing, lobbying, and other categories that would go away (not to mention the cumulative profits of insurers). I freely admit I'm no expert in healthcare, but I think there are savings to be had.
Other countries with single payor seem to make it work. No system is perfect, but ours isn't either -- we deliver great service to those wealthy enough to have the best benefit plans to fund care out of savings.
