Thanks for all the comments. I answered him on 3 main points.

1. US has abundant natural resources. That allows it to build up wealth, especially back in 18th and 19th century. (this seems to be the top pick by most)
2. US has people all over coming to this land, bringing diversity of cultures, ideas, innovations, work ethics that allows it to get ahead in technology and manufacturing. (I felt this is a big factor, and a bit surprised didn't see anyone else mention this. Perhaps because I'm a Gen 1.5 immigrant makes me felt stronger on this.)
3. US got a bit lucky with WW1 and WW2 that it didn't get hit by war and allow it to lead global economy post wars.

I didn't think about the form of government that's mentioned a lot below. I haven't thought about how important that is to the developing of this nation's strength. I'll be thinking about this a bit more.
