They weren’t being asked to opine on the first amendment

They were being asked a clear, hypothetical question about what is permissible on campus

Perhaps they were worried as you suggest that if they answered honestly they *would* be taken to task for failures on their campuses to enforce the policy. But TOO BAD! If you failed previously to keep students safe the correct response is NOT to try and make those past failures acceptable by evasive answers but instead to acknowledge the failure and promise to fix it. At absolute best it’s a failure in leadership and should get them fired. At worst it reflects their real sentiments which should *definitely* get them fired
